"My Christian parents embarrassed me."
A lot of de-churched people say this.
Sometimes the parents were flamboyant Christians who wore their faith on their sleeves.
During the teen years, kids usually find many things to be embarrassed about with their parents.
And kids of Christian parents may have an abundance of embarrassments to deal with,
with public demonstrations of faith, debates at holiday dinners, etc.
And many parents fight a losing battle with teens, to be honest.
Teens will be embarrassed if their adults act like adults or like real parents.
Most teens get super embarrassed if their parents try to act like teens in front of their friends,

Most teens get super embarrassed if their parents try to act like teens in front of their friends,
so there is no way to satisfy a teen in this aspect of life.
And there are de-churched young adults that were embarrassed
And there are de-churched young adults that were embarrassed
because their parents could talk the talk, but didn’t walk the walk.
Their parents embarrassed them by some facet of their lives that was contrary to scripture.
It happens. It ain’t right, but it happens.
.
So, either your parents were (are) big phonies that don’t know God and are eternally doomed,
or they were (are) simply imperfect, flawed mortals that are still learning how to live the mature Christian life.
Will you let this keep you from Christ? Is that wise? And I would counter this embarrassment with two other points:
1) There are many things that embarrassed adult children are happy to do with their parents:
* Opening birthday and Christmas presents from parents.
* Free babysitting that includes free food and overnight stays.
* Help repairing their cars and homes.
*Care packages. All of which most parents are happy to do to some degree.
Many young people are now going to college on their Christian parents’ $$$s,
yet laughing at Christians with non-believing friends over lattes paid for by dad and mom?
And many of them, in their 20s, are still on their parents’ phone plan and car insurance.
.
2) We need to complete this equation and discuss the years of embarrassment that parents inevitably have to endure because of their children’s behaviors and choices.

This is no small matter.
Every parent of now-adult children could write a book on these embarrassments.
Remember, children have sin natures too.
Remember, children have sin natures too.
Our sin natures didn’t just jump on us when we become adults.
We each carry our sin-nature with us from the moment we were conceived,
but until our minds and bodies matured to a certain point, we are given grace.
Look at videos of young siblings getting angry and being mean to each other.
This is sin that God doesn’t count against young children,
but parents should confront, to teach their children to control unkind impulses.
Be sure to remember these incidents when counting family embarrassments.
